What Is a Hybrid Piano?

The Four Major Hybrid Piano Series

By integrating digital technology with the natural feel and sound of an acoustic piano, hybrid pianos make it challenging to pinpoint where the traditional acoustic quality ends and the modern digital technology begins. Yamaha AvantGrand

Hybrid pianos in the Yamaha AvantGrand (1) series are digital pianos enhanced with acoustic qualities. Unlike other digital pianos, this one has a highly sophisticated hammer system designed to create a realistic feel and response, with no strings attached. The AvantGrand N1X, N2X, and N3X have grand piano sound because they use sound sampling recorded from a Yamaha C7 grand piano, whereas the NU1XA has an upright design and uses sampling from a Yamaha U1.

This means your music never goes out of tune, and you don’t have to factor in the investment of a yearly tuning. Plug in your headphones to immerse yourself in your world of music, or connect to audio or MIDI devices to record or broadcast your songs. 

Yamaha Silent Piano

Another piano with a hybrid feature is the Yamaha SILENT Piano™ (2). These are fully acoustic pianos that allow you to experience the sound of the finest concert grands in your headphones. Simply connect the headphones and slide the middle pedal left to activate Silent mode. This prevents the hammers from being struck, and instead, the sound is transmitted digitally into the headphones. 

The Silent mode ensures that you can play the piano at any time of day or night without competing with surrounding noises or disturbing your neighbors. Many Yamaha models come with the SH3 or SC3 Silent feature, both grands and uprights. 

What makes this hybrid so special is that you are still playing an acoustic piano, so you can enjoy the feel of your favorite Yamaha piano with headphones, but you never have to compromise on the action!

Yamaha TransAcoustic

The Yamaha TransAcoustic Piano™ (3) is another fantastic line of hybrids created to stretch the imagination of what is possible. This series of pianos uses an ultra-light transducer to turn digital sounds into vibrations, which then get amplified by the soundboard of the piano. Even though these acoustic pianos don’t have speakers, you can connect your smart device and play music through the piano, using the soundboard itself as a speaker!

The technology in this piano allows you to adjust the volume and combine digital sound with authentic resonance from the piano soundboard. This creates even more authentic nuances of sound as the articulation sensor system measures the force and movement to reproduce how you play. A big step up from the Yamaha Silent Piano, the TransAcoustic feature allows for even more instrument voice options, a greater depth of sound, and connectivity to audio, MIDI, or Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Yamaha Disklavier

By far the most entertaining hybrid piano available, the Yamaha Disklavier series (4), is the perfect entertainment center housed in the frame of a beautiful acoustic piano. Is it more acoustic or more digital? The answer is yes! Disklavier pianos are integrated with a special Optical Sensor System that measures and reproduces the subtle movements of each piano element, truly blurring the line between acoustic and digital. 

A Piano that Plays Back Songs for You

The Yamaha Disklavier replays songs for you, complete with movement of keys, hammers, and pedals, and it easily brings performances of the world’s top artists right into the comfort of your living room. 

A Piano that Records Your Music

Additionally, you can record your music or performances on this player system and play them back later for friends and family. The piano keeps track of the exact force and articulation you used to play each note and plays back your exact performance, pedals included.

A Piano that Connects to Your Smart Device

Disklavier pianos also connect to your smart device, allows the use of headphones for quiet mode, or you can sign up for a Disklavier Premium Pass and connect your piano to three streaming services for visually immersive performances or more personalized playlists.
